For The Nervous And Too Worried

Our Father in Heaven, help we, the nervous and too worried, of earth not to get hysterical or bent out of shape over sins we have committed or could have. Help us not to make things worse by becoming unbalanced with sorrow and guilt after being unbalanced in sin. Help us to live by balanced expectations. Give the grace that calms, Lord, the grace of affirming a sense of proportion that is often needed in this provocative life. Grant us common sense, self-control and practical realism in our love and in our life that we may hold ourselves together for those who need us as well as for the greater glory of God. In Jesusí name. Amen.

For A Great Many Now Confused

Oh, Lord, consider a great many of us now confused. May we not become more confused so we cross over the line of thrift into stinginess, push appetite into gluttony, carry drink into drunkenness, or in judging others go so far as to become critical and non-accepting. Let us not turn virtue into evil through expecting too much too soon, or doing too little too late. As Christian values thrive and grow through applying, let we who are trying to be good people think well ahead so our conduct can be useful, full of good will and seasoned with realism.

For Spiritual Times Every Day

Lord, give us grace that we may think, pray and try to create a spiritual time in our lives even on the busiest days. By making Christ our star to guide and the Holy Spirit our compass to direct, let us chart and order our lives to praise God and to enjoy Him each day. Then when the soulís voyage in the flesh is over, we shall find we have not only had the good times, but we have created good lives not altogether without harmony, worship, serenity and love. In Jesusí name we pray, Amen.

An Old Scotsmanís Prayer

Lord, teach me how to leave it with you when Iím tired and done with the wee bit I can still do. If I canít find the faith to leave it with you, Iíll worry and will not sleep. Next day Iíll be glum and my life effort weak. Then Iíll feel guilty over what I didnít do and how I had too much pride to leave it to you. Oh Lord, let me be brave enough to turn over to you all the things I like but no longer can do. Iím growing tired easier, more and more looking to you for the finish of any and all I do. As Iím wearing down, teach me to trust things to you. For Iím frightened now by what I canít do. But Iím not too scared for I know the Auld Book is true. You will be with me until I cross over to you. Amen.

Long Prayer Before Voting

Our Father, we are about to vote on an important decision in our country and, and while our voting decision is important, it is not that important. We should be more concerned about acrid political feelings, rancid political division and confused values of many in our nation. It is not simply smug winning makes bad losing. It appears the sense of a right way to lose is dying as the nation endorses the cult of winning as all that is really important. The resulting circumstances of bitter losers condemned to live with morally sick and advertising slick winners is not healthy. And, Lord, too often the great disputes of the political parties seem a simple matter of the pot calling the kettle black. In this political donnybrook, Lord, we need to think about issues far more important than whoever wins. Let us pray for those who will be victorious, those who may not, and the voters who have no choice but to try to survive with grace the winning side. Let us also pray to be patient and long suffering with the possibly questionable decisions soon to be made for us by the ďpot and kettleĒ Iron Age politicians. We are going to need grace because they appear to be total materialists, spiritually insensate and not subtle in their solutions. (Lord, I marvel that such prehistoric minds exist.) On this eve of voting, pray with me. Let us pray for one party of pots as well as the other party of kettles as they comment on how black the other seems. Let us pray that the voters may demonstrate godly wisdom added to common sense in voting. Above all, oh, God, we pray to Thee for this country and the danger it is in from mere politicians. The nation is, as you know, Lord, and as the Old Spiritual song wails ďstanding in the need of prayer.Ē Amen.

Responding To Godís Presence

Sometimes, Lord, we have an intuitive awareness of God, a feeling of Godís presence, an awareness of a greater spiritual mind tuned into and involved positively with our lives. We may not have asked Him to come, but we know He is with us. For may not even desire Godís intrusive presence in our materialistic lives because it calls up natural supernatural issues we would just as soon not deal with but avoid. In such awareness of His presence God whispers to His sons and daughters they are ready for companionship with Him. Help them to respond to the presence they know is there but whose existence they deny. They deny Him because they know Godís existence implies change in attitude and personality. They might have to enlarge their little lives of quiet selfishness to include others, spiritual claims and a bigger world. Amen

Prayers For Bravery To Reach Out

Gracious Lord, help those who are experiencing whisperings of Godís presence, and there are many, to have the bravery and grace to reach out to You. After all, when God smiles upon you, why be afraid to smile back? And God is smiling upon you by sharing a sense of His presence. He wants you to be aware of Him, but He wants more than a brief encounter with a stranger. He wants you to accept that He whom you have sensed is real. You will be happier, deeper and better to accept Him. Through Jesus, the Son of God, Amen.

A Prayer For Three Tasks Daily

Our Father, help us remember to do three tasks daily. The first is to read some scripture. The second is to try to sweep our minds clean of anything but God and breathe in silence for a time. The third is to brainstorm until you decide on a practical and real life way to apply your Christianity, then write it down and do it without fail. When you have done these, give God the Glory. Through Jesusí Name. Amen.

Prayerful Reflections Of Others

Our Father, let us pause and remember: Only if attached to others, do we find the deeper feelings, the quality of really living that people deeply want and need. It is through loving others we fall in love with life. It is by having to explain the way of God to others that we catch on to the way of God ourselves. It is in supplying othersí needs that we discover the image of Thee, our God, sleeping in us, in our need to transfigure ourselves through giving. It is through the eyes of others we first see ourselves mirrored and then form ourselves to be what we have glimpsed in their glass darkly. So let us be kind souls in looking out because kindly looks and love can one day come reflecting back. Let us then consider how important to our happiness are all others we share earth with. As they may hurt or help us even from afar, it is important that we also help them in gathering happiness and attuning their souls. The best way to do this is helping others where and when we may. It is a comfortable irony knowing while for others we are doing, we will also find ourselves spiritually renewing, therefore, being blessed in God through grace, let us do for others often, do it right and do it well. Let the Church say: Amen.

A Prayer For The Undeveloped America

Our Father, it is very difficult not to become bitter over the unmet physical needs of our poor in medical care, good schools adequate housing, and drug free environments. This is a rich world. Ours is the richest country on earth. However, we have a third world country in America that also needs to be developed. Let us remember charity begins at home. Through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

A Prayer In Spiritual Famine

Father, when we talk to the well off classes in America, we realize they are starved for more than bread alone. They are sufferers from a spiritual famine. There is a dearth of good values in the better off classes as well as serious confusion about priorities. They prate of those less well fortunate, but spiritually they are few less fortunate than they are. What the well-off are experiencing is spiritual famine that has caused a moral plague of dope, violence and public indifference. This is a different kind of non-physical suffering than the really poor, but, nevertheless, not any the less serious because the problems are not physical. Help us deal with the problem through Jesus Christ and in a way Jesus Christ would approve of. Amen.

Prayer For One Land, Two Peoples

Our Father, we as serious Christians need to realize that we have two peoples in one land to minister to. First there are the poor whose physical needs are not being met. If cared for physically, the poor also have a serious confusion of priorities and terrible values. Our second group of people seriously in need is a spiritually starved but materially better off middle class who have false values, comic priorities and no spiritual or interior life as a lighthouse from which to view. In Jesusí Name. Amen

Prayer On Serving Two Peoples

Oh, Lord, help us to realize we must serve two peoples in one land. This is no small task. We need people to serve who have some dedication and spiritual orientation. They need to be creative, concerned and less selfish than most. They need to have good priorities as well as spiritual values or they are going to be viewed as hypocrites. This is a large order for a nearly spiritually bankrupt country such as ours, but we make this request through Jesus Christ whose moving and touching Spirit forms and order all things in many ways according to His glory. Let us furnish Him through praise by service to His glory. Amen.

Thanking God For Mystery

Our Father, help us to get over our resentment of the mysteries that protect you from us and us from ourselves. Let us remember a God we could understand would be less than we are. We could not be expected to find time to worship a God less than we are since we would always be too busy trying to manipulate Him to our selfish desires. After all, Father, many of our prayers essentially mask frustrated attempts to have our will be done our way instead of His will, His way. If we understood Him, we as sinners would be endeavoring to use Him for our own selfish purposes as most prayers do now. Let us remember your mystery protects your Sovereignty as well as us from ourselves. Father, let us remember sometimes to pause and give thanks for what we do not know. In Jesusí name. Amen

A Prayer Not To Corrupt Principles

Our Father, let us not use our principles corruptly nor twist virtues to a degraded usage. Let us not be hypocrites who hide behind a mask of Christian virtue. May we realize that when we speak honestly to help others, we are speaking truth. When we speak honestly to hurt or tell on others to be mean, we are doing evil. No good will come of it. For we are then wolves in sheepís clothing. May we learn this truth: Thou shalt not corrupt a principle intended to do good by using it in an evil way. Imprint this on our brains. We already know it in our hearts. In Jesusí Name. Amen

A Prayer For A Society With A NaÔve Faith in Law

Oh, God, in a society with a naÔve faith in law, let us recall that by the time the law is involved, the spiritual battle, the real social battle, is usually lost. The law is negative preventionism, which is the wall erected when the positive inspirations for right living fails in the lives of many people. When the wall we call the law is reached, social discontent and contempt has reached the second and serious stage of indifference to the public welfare. When taken to court, no heart is settled by law or in a court. The ultimate solution of the angry heart is not settled or soothed in court or changed by law. Our Father, we would recall that people must first live from the deep wells of inspiration found in their family, their peers, their country or their God. Where that fails, people must be shown by example and subdued with courtesy. They must be talked to respectfully the more so if they are not respectable. Oh, Lord, let us be aware mechanistic discipline minus deep personal concern changes almost no one. Let us remember that deep personal concern will rarely be found in a bureaucratic maze of social servants paid to appear superficially concerned. Let us remember the governments and all their mazes of enormous and fundamentally indifferent bureaucracies will never be able to supply the spiritual needs that touch. Therefore the congregations must go to labor in these fields. May they be sent through Thy grace bearing Jesus Christ. And may we remember there are more people in our jails than in London. Amen.

Prayer Of Thanks

Our Father, any mother knows there is nothing else quite like having your own child, only she is never able to explain fully how affirming, transforming and satisfying it is. In this way believers in God know there is nothing else like having Christ as a companion to enjoy and be with through our days. We too are never able to verbalize fully the transcendence, the transforming, and life- affirming joy of knowing God whose life is intertwined in ours through grace. Thank you for giving us glorious feelings from heaven like that of Godís presence and motherhood that can be felt even here on earth. Amen.

Obedience To The Unenforceable

Our Father, enable us to teach the children of the faith that what is not seen is the Most Real and the Will of the Not Seen is To Obey The Unenforceable. For in this is the glorious mystery of of God made real and the greater happiness of the world and themselves to be found. It is fitting one should follow from the other. Through Jesusí Name. Amen.
